Assembling the lattice – Part 1

Have you ever bent the pins of RGB LEDs before? With 3 pins to be bent on each of the 520 LEDs it really calls for some help to bend 1560 pins.

After I could feel my hands again I started soldering the LED rows. A total of 64 rows are needed. By the time I’m writing this I have already finished about two thirds (44 rows finished, 20 more to go). Later on, the rows are used to build the planes. Each plane consists of 8 rows and the resulting 8 planes will be put together to form the cube.

Here are some images showing the progress of soldering the LED rows.

I bent about 2.500 LEDs with 3 pins each. I could very well feel my hands afterwards — to be precise, I had no choice: they were bloody from the sharp edges of the pins and hurt a lot. So, yes: I know what it feels like to leave this work behind. Well done!

    Hey,
first of all , I’m still amazed by all the work and efford you have put in this project. As I plan on doing something similar I was wondering what those rods are made of and where I could get some to build my cube nice and straight :)

Thank you for your comment. The rods are made out of brass. I think you can grab some of those from your local hardware store.
